Panel Discussion: Cross Cultural Experiences: Lessons from EthicalCoach

Session length: 45 minutes

2019-06-11T13:00:00-04:00 Tuesday, June 11th 13:00 EDT

EthicalCoach is a bridge between world-class coaches and nonprofit organizations. The mission is to deliver resources and tools that build capacity within nonprofits, enabling them to increase their impact and serve more people in need.

In October 2018, EthicalCoach launched its inaugural project in Ethiopia, which paired international coaches from across the globe with local coaches in service of Ethiopian nonprofit leaders and their teams.

Our increasingly interconnected world and diverse workforce requires culturally confident coaches. Successful coaching frameworks, content, and methodologies are highly dependent on the context in which they occur. Working with leaders from a variety of cultural backgrounds and coaching leaders managing culturally diverse teams requires coaches to navigate a vast array of values, beliefs, assumptions and approaches.

During this panel session,  Cross Cultural Experiences: Lessons From Ethiopia and Beyond, international coaches Nobantu Mpotulo, Marilyn O'Hearne and Katherine Holt along with local coach Yonas Tegene will:

  • Explore cultural dexterity and cultural intelligence in coaching
  • Share experiences of co-facilitating team coaching across cultures
  • Look at strategies for ensuring we are adapting effectively across cultures

Key Learning Takeaways

  1. Understand the role culture plays in coaching.
  2. List potential strategies for adapting effectively across cultures.
  3. Awareness of your own values, beliefs, assumptions and approaches.

Nobantu Mpotulo, Live Coaching Demonstration

Session length: 90 minutes

2020-03-05T09:00:00-05:00 Thursday, March 5th 9:00 EDT

The session is based on the principle that is used mostly in Southern Africa and other parts of Africa. This is called “Ubuntu” which means “I am because We Are” Ubuntu was used as the theme for launching the Ethical Coach Program in Ethiopia. Used in coaching Ubuntu ensures that the coach really sees the client.

In South Africa when you greet a person you say SAWUBONA, meaning I see you, I see everyone who has contributed to who you are, I see your dreams, hopes and aspirations. Using Ubuntu in coaching entails PRESENCE for both Coach and Client. It is based on bringing out the following Cs: Compassion, Courage, Curiosity, Connection, Commitment to Action

As a coach when you are applying Ubuntu Coaching the following process is followed. This process is coined RASEA by Nobantu

Receive: The coach receives what the client offers with compassion, curiosity, presence and unconditional acceptance

Appreciate: The coach appreciates the client for entrusting him/her with co-creating solutions, for the clients courage and what the client is working on

Summarize: The coach summarizes what he/she hears the client saying (I see you, I hear you)

Evoke: The coach explores what is evoked for the client and might share what is evoked for him/her

Ask: Coach ask WHO, HOW, WHEN questions to move the client to action

Key Learning Takeaways

  1. How coach ensures PRESENCE and brings out both Being and Doing in the client.
  2. Integration of Head, Heart, Hands (Intellectual intelligence, Emotional Intelligence, Instinctual intelligence), bringing out the whole person.
  3. Process applies Systems Thinking “I am because We Are”.
